Graduation

Today our daughter graduated from Elementary School, going on to Jr/Sr High School, a first big step in her education now behind her. We are so proud of her achievements, her kind ways and her happy nature. May the next years bring her much fun and learning, experience, friendships and maturing into young adulthood!
We can't wait to be there each step of the way!
I have to admit, I saw her today and my heart was filled with joy and some sorrow, seeing her so fast growing up and slipping out of her childhood in to the years, where we parents have to learn to stay back more, watch as she starts trying on her own and let her make her mistakes and take all the life lessons more on her own.
But it is as well a time of new pleasures. As I remember growing up is fun! I certainly could not wait to be there!
So, lets enjoy the ride, the ups and downs, may she be healthy and happy in the years to come!

To outbalance the girlishness of her beautiful dress she put hot pink high lights in her hair....our cool chick!

On texture

Materials excite me, I love to feel things and my imagination takes me back in time, where things come from, what they are made of and who touched them before me...
Who worked on them and who lived with it!

I am a tactile person, but not only this, I love to see visual contrasts, I experience pleasure in seeing a patina, texture and age. This must stem from my love for wood, glass, felt, fabrics and china, metals and feathers, nests and stones.

I am incorrigible collector of shells and can contemplate an old wall in Oxford or the graffiti in Berlin. I love peeling walls, old, layered paint or wallpaper, I enjoy roaming old houses, seeing threadbare carpets and feel sand between my toes.

The keys on my piano make me happy, sunshine on wood and the shadows before evening!

I absolutely love old houses and trees. Their texture is familiar to me, I love wrinkles and folds of the wood and the wood siding on houses, bend from age.

Do you love to feel things? Are there materials you do not like to see and feel?
I'd love to hear from you.

Schmap...my photo

I took this picture a few month ago during my oldest son's visit home. We had spend a beautiful early spring day at Wave Hill, visiting the gardens and greenhouses. I posted about it on March 9th, 2009. You can find it under link within -Places I love!

Yesterday I've got an e-mail from one of the editors of Schmap, an online worldwide cultural guide to sites and special events. They informed me, that one of my pictures of Wave Hill, the wonderful estate with gardens in the Bronx,NY had been chosen to represent it in their latest New York edition. They had picked it from thousands of Flickr pics together with some other great photographers.
Well, it makes me happy, I am riding the air waves...
You can find my photo and name when you click on the Schmap widget and look for Wave Hill, Bronx,NY.
Yippee!

Allium

I love those decorative Alliums. Beautiful spheres.
This one is already slowly drying. They work wonderfully in flower arrangements.

And I adore them in their blooming splendor.

Glass cabinets

I have a special connection to all kinds of glass cabinets. Maybe it's my passion for displaying and collecting things, maybe it's the old exciting feeling of finding treasures buried under books and papers. Perhaps images of the curiosity cabinets of the 18Th century drift in front of my inner eye, filled with the incredible collections of amateur scientists, gentleman with the means of accumulating pieces from the far ends of the world such as butterflies, insects, gems, trophies from antiquity, busts and stuffed birds, African masks, shells, corals, odds and ends of personal interest!

John Derian's home

Later, when fine china and books became widely available regular households kept such valuable things in often beautifully decorated cabinets.

Cabinets had been around since the beginning of the 17Th century mostly to display the collections at various courts in Europe. Glass itself was expensive, made by hand and not yet widely available to furniture makers. By the mid 18TH century glass cabinets had become popular, particularly with the first movements of enlightenment.

People not only showed their status with money but through education and knowledge of the arts and sciences. Discoveries in far lands made collections and the first, mostly private museums possible.

At my first visit to the British Museum only a few years back I was reminded of those early days of collecting and the burning desire to get to know the world.
The walls are covered with the most delightful glass cabinets, filled with treasures.

Today we can find use of glass cabinets everywhere, from keeping a proper butlers pantry stacked with china to towels in the bathroom.

We still house collections and books, although in the second half of the 20Th century the use had become of less importance. Open shelves had taken over. Modern, more reduced forms and the shift of entertainment had changed they way we lived and rooms had become often smaller and more functional.

Many of us use glass cabinets in kitchens and this is rather new development, since in times past, when wealthy people didn't run their own household but the stuff reigned in the kitchen and utility quarters these old kitchens were not thought of as stylish places.
Well, since then families have become much smaller and family life now happens largely in spacious kitchen/dining/family rooms. Again we use glass cabinets for the display of books, china and so much more.
Collecting things is a human need it seems, people enjoy bringing things together, they group and sort, compare and categorize, it's a way of knowing who we are and were we live. Showing off one's prized possessions in a most delightful way is a joy to pass on!

Another Happy Birthday

June 17th, flowers and your cake, my love!

Happy Birthday!

To my oldest son, the one with whom I learned to be a mother 22 years ago, the one who taught me more patience and unconditional love, the one who paved the way for his siblings, the one who is such kind brother. The kid who travelled and the boy who never gave up in tough times, the young man who makes us so proud to know him!
Cheers and many happy returns! We have a cake and eat it too today in your honor!!!
We love you, Mama and the gang! Berlin/New York is going strong!
