It's a tradition we all cherish. This year we had waited with the purchase of a tree for the return home of one of our kids from school to decorate and then one thing let to another, time passed and suddenly it was two days ago and no tree had been bought. Husband busy away on a business trip, me busy with everything else. Nobody seemed to miss anything.</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Kid away at school and therefore kind of out of the house suggested skipping the tree. I called an emergency family meeting and husband declared to be indifferent. One kid almost in tears, myself crumbling by the sheer thought of Christmas without a tree. I have certain rationale, but that went too far. Yes we would be traveling and yes, we would not enjoy a tree very long. I suggested a faux tree.... One kid almost in tears again. Husband still on the edge. Kid home from school still fully committed to no tree. </span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">So I decided to branch out and get a tree. Alone if need be. Asked if kid in tears was ready to join, but got a no. The fun would only be had if we all would go. Oh, well. So off I drove alone, a tight knot in my throat, going to our traditional tree hunting place and in bitter cold wind made the tree guy unwrap tree after tree to get the right one. My eyes watered. Finally I decided on a lovely Fraser fir tree. Six feet, full and pretty to look at. Alone I went to pay and alone I helped the young man get the tree onto the roof of the car. Alone I put it in the garage and went inside, where husband read the papers. You've got a tree, he asked. Yep, I answered, it's in the garage.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Next afternoon he had carried the tree inside and I started the lights and ribbons. Slowly not so small kids trundled in and asked to help. Kid home from school found Christmas music on youtube and kid two delighted in memories with every unpacked ornament. The tree stood finally in all its glory and there was peaceful silence. Happy with the tree, I asked kid home from school. Sure, she answered, wouldn't be Christmas without it.</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The last few weeks have seen me more in the kitchen then usual for I have developed a <strike>liking</strike> - no - a heavy crush on baking with sourdough. After the first awkward trials I have found my recipe, which is a very satisfying organic spelt sourdough bread. I use the no-kneed method, explained in detail on the very helpful <a href="http://www.breadtopia.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #b45f06;">Breadtopia</span></a> website. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">And low and behold I have become more expertly about the doughs. Lately I have also begun to make sourdough pancakes and rolls as well. I know, the possibilities are endless. In our case, we try to stick to low gluten or gluten free baking, which is occasionally a challenge, since most traditional recipes do not calculate for the different ingredients. So it's a lot of trial and error and a lot of fantastic searching online, where I have found many related blogs, sites and talented people, always willing to listen and to give advise.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">It's a particular community of bread bakers out there and I feel a little related already.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">After I had been given a starter from a friend, together we were off baking different combinations of grains, but I very quickly ended up with pure organic spelt sourdough. It is a mildly nutty tasting bread, enhanced through the sweet and sour taste of the wild yeast fermentation. </span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Bread and rolls need also time to rest after baking. So I usually resist the urge to cut right into it. Bread can sit to cool for at least 6 hour or longer and then stored in an airtight container. I do not wrap the bread in any foils, it makes bread too soft and even might end up moldy.</span> </div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">culture...</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">As a reader of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/hvhappenings"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #b45f06;">Hudson Valley Happenings</span></a> I am more and more drawn into the beautiful neighborhoods along the Hudson River, just beyond my doorstep. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I am glad to be able to be so close to so many amazing places. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">One of them is this little gem: </span><br />

Being a hopeless bibliophile makes this just the destination to get lost in for hours.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I wonder if there is a reading nook....</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">And being so close to other lovely destinations like Hudson on Hudson, Hyde Park or Rhinebeck, this would be a fabulous day trip to explore. Maybe I throw in some apple picking...</span><br />

<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I always love a good long road trip. The expectation of being out there on roads not taken before or using the familiar ones yet again to reach a beloved destination fills me with an unexplainable joy. Some yearning I fulfill in these moments, to feel being the stranger finding new shores, or a traveller on the brink of a wonderful discovery, may it be the bend in the road with a farm stand loaded with freshly picked apples or peaches, a fabulous view or the cutest village just somewhere unexpected...I am inspired.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">It's the moment of being there, the knowledge that it will pass quickly that I absorb the flavors of these places.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidIjEQYhON59aEwtNfmYIAxwWXsY6TFhN8C87wT5BgqfxM6obzX_txW9-2i882nDVstLBJimfuk9HT3rCMbVCheHB6F1DMKHxi8XYW9xqzcx1Vw_601UFSCBnQhnqP7RjMRzKhHwm_QKbJ/s1600/IMG_0259.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidIjEQYhON59aEwtNfmYIAxwWXsY6TFhN8C87wT5BgqfxM6obzX_txW9-2i882nDVstLBJimfuk9HT3rCMbVCheHB6F1DMKHxi8XYW9xqzcx1Vw_601UFSCBnQhnqP7RjMRzKhHwm_QKbJ/s400/IMG_0259.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Yet I have found traveling long distances on American highways can be extremely disappointing when it come to the food choices. Miles and miles of stretches without even the remotest possibility of a plain bathroom break, let alone a decent place to eat, unless you count McDonald's, Subway, Starbucks or any other cheap food chain into your options.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Of course, I understand the American culture, the ways Americans at large like to eat when out there, often, I am sure, due to the lack of options and price considerations.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">But I never really liked fast foods, their smells, taste and choice of ingredients.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">It has become much harder since I became a rather picky eater, avoiding dairy, wheat and meat. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">When planing any trips I usually travel with my own pantry supplies, knowing that even simple soy milk for my coffee is hardly available at your typical road stop.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I'll stuff baskets with fruits, nuts, seeds, veggies, home made cookies or store bought raw bars, bring plenty of water and bottled home brewed tea. Unceremoniously I eat while driving or hand out little snacks. I perhaps stop for a cup fresh coffee.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">But where to turn, once I arrive at my destination? Typical hotels have their classic breakfasts and I avoid them when I can.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">So, while staying in Lancaster, PA two nights ago, to drop off my daughter at her friend's college for a visit, I was prepared. The breakfast menu at the hotel held no surprises. Nothing I would have wanted.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I had brought a small pack of plain almond milk, a tiny envelope with raw chia seeds, bananas and a few nuts. I had bought fresh Amish apples from a stand still open in town when we arrived. Before going to bed I prepared my breakfast porridge. Mixing the chia seeds with the 'milk', I knew I would have a pudding-like refreshing food for breakfast next morning. All I would have to add were a fresh cut banana and some nuts.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">After looking online a day prior to my arrival to find a vegetarian or vegan restaurant I was pleasantly surprised by a few good options. Not being very familiar with the town I had prepared myself to know where I would be going.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">As we wandered the small and charming streets in Lancaster, PA I was reminded of many small towns I have visited over the last years living in America. There is something typical of small town American architecture, the compactness and the will to preserve.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The recent recession has left a mark on many small towns, boarded up homes and closed, vacant storefronts telling the story. And yet I find always the spirit of renewal, a small cafe, a brave little shop, trying to sell anything from soaps to home made cakes, the spirit of survival and perseverance. I love this about America. I support it too whenever I can.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">My daughter and I talked about their lifestyle later on our drive home and we both thought it very hard to imagine to live without our daily conveniences. But there is something about the simple ways of living, the plain joys and the straight forwardness in the life the Amish lead, that intrigues me. It is exotic and as a child, growing up in East Germany, I had never heard of it. Even later, when Indian food was known to me, I completely ignored it in my own meal preparations.</span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Only know, after I discovered healthier, often raw 'cooked' meals, made with many spices rather then just salt and pepper, after learning of the many benefits of herbs and spices in a preventive medicinal way, I found my way to Turmeric. It is also known as Goldenseal.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">It is not to be missed: The deep golden yellow color and it's staining power make it surely memorably to deal with, from cooking utensils to fingertips all will be marked yellow. So be careful when you use it. An old t-shirt is preferred in the kitchen and stay away from white!</span><br />

<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I use turmeric mainly as an digestive aid. It is wonderful after any large meal, indulgence after rich deserts or cooked meals, which need a little help along the digestive tract. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I found the turmeric root at Whole Foods on occasion and grate it raw into salads.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">So far I mixed it also in warm drinks, but I learned of a better way to prepare it. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">This recipe combines the benefits of turmeric, ginger and raw honey.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I found it tasty, lightly spicy and yet sweet enough to easily drink as a tea. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Since I am not using any dairy I substituted the milk with almond milk.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">If you drink dairy, feel free to exchange the almond milk with regular cow's milk.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">This spice is used as a tea in Ayurvedic practices for curcumin present in turmeric. It acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and remedies gastrointestinal discomfort associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and other digestive disorders.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">It also lowers cholesterol, reduces platelet aggregation, inhibits proliferation of cancer cells and improves digestion by improving the flow of bile from the gallbladder.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">It also acts as an external antibiotic in preventing bacterial infection in wounds. (cuts, burns and bruises)</span><br />

<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">How to make it:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Bring 4 cups of water to a boil, add 1 teaspoon of turmeric, 1 1/2 teaspoons of ginger powder and simmer for 10 min. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Strain through a fine mesh into a large bottle, add 1 cup of milk. Mix it all up. After cooling enough to be just warm, add raw honey to your liking. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I leave the honey until I am ready to drink the warm tea and then add about a large teaspoon per cup.</span><br />

Just cleansing is a great reason too....</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">All you need:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">4 freshly cut slices of ginger ca 1/8 inch thick </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Juice from 1/2 lemon</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1-2 tbsp raw honey</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1 pinch of cayenne powder</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Pour hot water over the ginger, squeeze in lemon juice, and the cayenne.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Let steep for a few minutes, stir, add the raw honey when cool enough to drink! Add maybe a leave of mint or basil to decorate....</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Drink 3, 4 times a day. </span><br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikyiKnYE8WnILaNoCNF8XGCg471tssPiHHtjTgIRBRloIv3JkEp-gJRE0z-CmC2dTV_XByTxKh97N-1cL1W3wZimb6Gda8wcdQnXAFzp2U9iUbSoxVtzxZNXE_FUScM3Ca5H5FT_fwYY4H/s1600/15848895.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikyiKnYE8WnILaNoCNF8XGCg471tssPiHHtjTgIRBRloIv3JkEp-gJRE0z-CmC2dTV_XByTxKh97N-1cL1W3wZimb6Gda8wcdQnXAFzp2U9iUbSoxVtzxZNXE_FUScM3Ca5H5FT_fwYY4H/s640/15848895.jpg" width="412" /></span></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">This book fell into my lap on a Friday night. Last Friday night... I love intriguing teen stories, coming of age of sorts.... fantasy and mystery rolled in one.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Of course I could not resist the free download offer either. By Saturday morning I was done.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">As I begun reading, the old, yet every time new feeling of excitement and flatter in my stomach took hold of me and I read Evan Burl's tale in one go.... Given a few hours in between to feed the family and pick the kids up from school.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I am in awe of the amazing plot, which wraps itself in an almost timeless, yet futuristic setting. I had steampunk images floating through my head, while following Evan through the mysterious rooms, the cauldroen, the walls of the castle. The basic story follows a boy and his friends, mostly orphaned children living with him under the rule of his uncle, working hard for something untold, a frightening, magic treasure of sorts... Something which inflicts some with death, others with powers so large, it becomes almost unmanageable. Evan's self detected fate to become a monster seems unavoidable, yet he fights the demons around him, there is always this shady glimmer of hope to escape the foretelling. It's a wrestling with the good and bad inside oneself, the world at large and the people who have power over us.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The language is rich and the images are lush. Justin Blaney has managed to create a believable magic world, one, far enough from our reality to make it true fantasy and close enough to life to experience all the ups and downs of a teen, trying to follow his heart. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The story is complex and rich, but I felt gently guided into all the different viewpoints. It helps to slip into the different characters/minds to follow the storyline and to get the picture.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Knowing that Evan Burl, Henri, Pearl have not finished their journey into freedom helped tremendously to overcome my slight disappointment with the final pages, there is just a little too much suspense for my need for somewhat happy endings... But it makes me anticipate the next sequel with impatience.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I absolutely can see this turned into a movie, ( I'd love to be the set designer) and at the same time as an audio book... I love to listen to such stories.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I recommend it for all fantasy lovers and teens who love to glide into a different world, yet close to their own feelings.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

Different, tasty and zesty!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Being German, I love pumpernickel. But not every type will do. I go for the original, around here fairly available: </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkxuo7FqNCrDLGx3s9Nn9WaU-QCkJc-5t2lxODj45XEvQTlaKBtJoZlwzj9tyPxDto41CQb8S3YZt6MZDPoJWZTbToFFozgAM8p0VrKD-XoXGuvj0b_-lbXezC2-_YXbUu5W_FWJJ0xxQP/s1600/Screen+shot+2013-05-30+at+8.53.05+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="291" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkxuo7FqNCrDLGx3s9Nn9WaU-QCkJc-5t2lxODj45XEvQTlaKBtJoZlwzj9tyPxDto41CQb8S3YZt6MZDPoJWZTbToFFozgAM8p0VrKD-XoXGuvj0b_-lbXezC2-_YXbUu5W_FWJJ0xxQP/s400/Screen+shot+2013-05-30+at+8.53.05+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I topped it here with Guacamole, mixed with miso paste for added nutrition, cut some mixed leftover lettuce leaves and decorate it with cherry tomatoes. Drizzle fresh lemon juice and.... voila! A tasty treat!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">It's also wonderful with butter and quark, a sour cream like</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">fermented dairy product, very common in Germany, topped with thinly sliced green onions, hmmm, it's especially delicious. </span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1 large organic golden beet, leaves and all</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">4 cups of organic carrots</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">3 handful of organic spinach</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">4 sticks of organic celery</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">2 large leaves of organic kale</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">2 large organic oranges</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1 inch fresh ginger</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1 juice of 1 lemon</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">3 leaves of basil</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1 handful of parsley</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Press all through the juicer, enjoy!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Makes enough for three or four, depending on serving size.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I mention the organic, but I usually choose only this option. Seldom I take conventionally raised vegetables. Especially in juicing. Keeps fresh in the fridge for 1 day!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">In the picture also my latest acquisition, Gwyneth Paltrow's latest cook book: It's All Good! Indeed! Check it out, it's fabulous....</span><br />

(For easy access I use Knudsen Green juice) The sugar I consume from the ready made juice is minimal but the taste in the drink is so improved. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I make a little more then a 1 quart.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">3 - 4 cups of distilled water</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1 - 2 cups of Knudsen's Mega Green</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1/8 - 1/4 cup of Bragg's apple cider vinegar , read more about the benefits<a href="http://bragg.com/products/bragg-organic-apple-cider-vinegar.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;"> here</span></a>.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">2 pinch of ginger powder (one can use fresh one as well, try out amounts, but ginger is rather powerful as powder, I guess you can use a little more of the grated one.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Make it to taste. Add a little more green juice to make it less spicy. Or add more water.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhut1EWq8qGvRfkfc8AqK75FVZlMe1JJITciDLzFXu6zA7binbI3LOCPAazp-dc7FOLKChgJxP_GkiDwby_37rq7hqyz8Bvgvjc1wyGrvj-oNewGoro6xzSQFaxt_CSWZ7KeVOuzYPK_ZO2/s1600/IMG_0382.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhut1EWq8qGvRfkfc8AqK75FVZlMe1JJITciDLzFXu6zA7binbI3LOCPAazp-dc7FOLKChgJxP_GkiDwby_37rq7hqyz8Bvgvjc1wyGrvj-oNewGoro6xzSQFaxt_CSWZ7KeVOuzYPK_ZO2/s400/IMG_0382.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Of course, now I will begin to experiment more: with fresh juiced vegetables, added Chlorella powder or spirulina....think about the possibilities.</span><br />

The one day we love to sleep in, hang out in PJ's, chat on the phone with family and are generally late.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">But we get up to create a light breakfast, served at bedside and enjoyed by all. My husband gets up to make a cup of coffee for each of us and I whip up a quick smoothie for all.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Today it was sweet, but light and fully nutritious.</span><br />

<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">If you feel under the weather and like to give your immune system a real kick, you should not hesitate and follow this recipe, which I have tried many times and every time succeed in getting over the low down quickly. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">You will need:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Juice from 6 organic lemons</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">3 cups pineapple juice (Knudsen f.e.)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">2 tablespoons raw honey</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1 whole bulb of garlic, peeled (at least 8 large sections)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">2 tsp ginger powder</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1/4 tsp cayenne powder</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Mix all in a blender and drink within 24 hours, makes about 4 - 5 cups. Add a little more pineapple juice if you feel it's to spicy. But I love it the way it comes, I feel it surges through me, warms me and makes me feel better soon.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Fill up into a glass bottle and keep in the refrigerator.</span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">To your health!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Everywhere in my blog neighborhoods appear dishes and recipes. See <a href="http://www.mybloomsburylife.blogspot.com/">here</a> and <a href="http://www.pvedesign.blogspot.com/">here</a>... The season invites for home cooked meals, friends around the table and the splendors of autumn to be enjoyed. Last Saturday's market stroll yielded many fruits and vegetables, among them a sumptuous heirloom pumpkin, which begged to be made into a lovely soup for Sunday nights family dinner, book club guests snack later and follow up lunch on Monday.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">My youngest stood by when I carved the top off and deep into the orange flesh to reveal a wonderful terrine for the soup later on.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">It smelled delicious and we first roasted the pumpkin seeds as a snack. </span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Recipe for heirloom pumpkin soup:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1 medium size pumpkin</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">2 apples</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1 medium size onion</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">2-3 cloves of garlic</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">5 carrots</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1 quart of vegetable <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">or</span> chicken broth</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">2 tbsp sunflower oil</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1/4 stick butter <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">or</span> 3 tbs olive oil, thyme, parsley, ginger, chopped raw spouted almonds, pepper and sea salt.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1/2 cup half and half</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">To sprout almonds: soak raw almonds for about three hours, rinse, drain and put in a glass jar to sprout for a few hours, small tips will appear on the small end of almonds, use as usual or dry in dehydrator until dry. If you want them raw, do not roast them.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Carve the pumpkin carefully, let there be enough flesh be around to keep the pumpkin as a serving bowl.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Set aside.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Cut flesh in to smaller pieces, take out some of the stringy pumpkin fibers, sort out seeds for roasting.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Spread seeds - washed and dried - on to a baking sheet, bake @ 350 degree for about 15 min, until crispy.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Cut apples, onion, garlic and carrots in smaller pieces and roast in butter or oil for a couple of minutes. Do not burn the garlic and onions. Empty chicken or vegetable broth in large stockpot, add pumpkin pieces and all the gently roasted vegetables and bring to a boil, add thyme, gently cook for about 30 minutes, until all is soft.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">In Blender blend small batches of soup and return to pot. Add fresh ginger, pepper and salt and keep warm. Reduce to a comfortable thickness. Take off the heat.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Add half and half. (Or leave that out) Serve with chopped almonds and a good measure of parsley!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">For added drama serve in your pumpkin!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Bon appetite!</span><br />
<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I call this one Mother Earth for its lovely mild and earthy taste. I freshly squeezed two apples, two handful of mixed greens (left over from my salad greens) one medium beet, 1/2 lbs of carrots and one tsp Udi's oil.</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">This is another really lovely drink. Kefir based and deliciously refreshing.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Take 2 cups (lactose free) kefir, 2 cups fresh squeezed orange juice, add two frozen bananas and 1tsp vanilla powder extract, mix in blender and serve immediately.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">These recipe comes from <i>Diane Stobo's</i> wonderful book </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.dianastobo.com/get-naked-fast/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #6aa84f;">'Get Naked Fast'</span></a>...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmQazn34Jh0bOfKtubJymMRKwyb4S_FJiHApxQst1yQG110l1A-PD6JyHtfcE8aLW8IljOv_ZAm6b6MEvoj5yFoFZEFSbPf6ty0frkgGe5iolysk0AU7S24-WUBLWwL6ZqxWWRegp7ppwo/s1600/IMG_7689.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmQazn34Jh0bOfKtubJymMRKwyb4S_FJiHApxQst1yQG110l1A-PD6JyHtfcE8aLW8IljOv_ZAm6b6MEvoj5yFoFZEFSbPf6ty0frkgGe5iolysk0AU7S24-WUBLWwL6ZqxWWRegp7ppwo/s640/IMG_7689.jpg" width="446" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #f1c232; font-size: large;">The easiest way to freeze bananas: </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">First peel ripe bananas, cut into 1 inch pieces and lay open on top of a paper towel or thin plastic sheet in freezer. After they are frozen transfer into freezer bag, remove air and store in freezer until use.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">They come in handy in every smoothie, which needs a little added frozen coolness. Better then ice cubes.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Enjoy!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Often I substitute typical morning fare with a smoothie. It's fast and loaded with healthy goodness, which keeps me going for a good while. This one is vegan and utmost delicious. You can of course substitute fruits or add sweetener, but I feel this is not even necessary. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The recipe is enough for two portions.</span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Take 2 1/2 cups of almond milk (Fresh or store bought)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">pour in blender and add the following</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">2 tsp raw cacao powder</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">2 tsp lucuma powder</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">2 bananas </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1/2 cup frozen aronia berries </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">(They add antioxidants and vitamin C and the gorgeous color!) </span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">And smoothies and juices simply cannot be done without it.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Of course there is still the option to eat fresh raw fruits and veggies, which we did, but one can only do this for so long in a cold house, which forces you eventually out into restaurants and any kind of food place to satisfy your hunger. Which gave me again another look into the mostly unhealthy and /or one sided approach to cooking and eating in restaurants in general. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Of course we were grateful for the multigrain sandwiches and soups, salads and fish dishes, but overall the choices for truly healthy eating are still rather slim. So we were absolutely delighted, when we came across the <a href="http://local.greenwichtime.com/b19979943/Hudson-Grille">Hudson Grille</a> in White Plains, which offers, apart from their delicious burgers and other regular fare, an extended gluten free and vegetarian section on the menu. I can report it can be done satisfactory.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Let's hope these offers become even more mainstream and restaurants will pick up this trend, as more and more customers are willing or in need for alternative food offerings.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">They even had soy milk for my coffee, still often unavailable at many restaurants and even coffee shops and other breakfast venues.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Here is to healthy eating....</span><br />
<br />

I love the saturated color and it's wonderful for the body... in a raw juice for example.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">This one is the last sip I rescued for a photo shoot, before being devoured by my family.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">It is so delicious and all the beta carotene will maintain a healthy eyesight. You'll need to add an oil - I choose Udi's DHA 3*6*9 Oil Blend - to make the vitamin A available to the body. The fat breaks it down to be as efficiently as possible absorbed into the bloodstream.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">But it is simply divine and refreshing!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1 lbs organic carrots</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">4 organic oranges</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">6 organic apples</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Juice, add oil, drink immediately!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">4 teaspoons Udi's Oil Blend</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">It took two minutes to make and it's really nourishing.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Why it's not raw? The soup base is a store bought juice, which is pasteurized, therefore not raw! Of course that can be done fully raw too...</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

Whenever the weather turns cold and rainy I long for the nourishment of soups. They can be hearty or light, but the warmth is always welcome.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Since I began eating a more raw based diet, I have long thought how to incorporate soups into it and I have found that small amounts of meat fit better in it then any other substitutes. (I rather avoid wheat and white rice)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I use occasionally gluten free pasta, if I want a little bite, but usually a light broth with veggies will be enough to satisfy my appetite. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"> Through a </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">lovely friend, who, like me, is interested in raw and other healthy food alternatives,</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"> I discovered a wonderful book by Sally Fallon, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Nourishing-Traditions-Challenges-Politically-Dictocrats/dp/0967089735" style="color: #45818e;">Nourishing Traditions</a>. She incorporates many ideas of a natural, back to basics approach to cooking, yet filled with the wisdom of the often forgotten useful methods of making food at home. I do not agree with all her reasoning about food (f.e. her dislike of soy on the grounds of being unhealthy and her promotion of full fat dairy) and some of the recipes are more difficult to make then others, but I pick, what I feel is right for me and my family. There is a lot of good found between these pages.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCBNI2BbTvTW3R18_0fF0u4RqFBOg7cqGmHYWlLbExTa3l9l6rNoBOJFBMQ7SH22o6XtuqRCEjaBbrobGdgQvx3IfVHO12Szhg6P2WpWPkcWdiJTPoy6sA_CIniJJsm41fCkh9RmWtUe5M/s1600/IMG_7937.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCBNI2BbTvTW3R18_0fF0u4RqFBOg7cqGmHYWlLbExTa3l9l6rNoBOJFBMQ7SH22o6XtuqRCEjaBbrobGdgQvx3IfVHO12Szhg6P2WpWPkcWdiJTPoy6sA_CIniJJsm41fCkh9RmWtUe5M/s640/IMG_7937.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">These methods are crucial for the success of the recipes, often making the foods easier to digest and I am grateful to have gotten the book. It closes the gap for me between raw diet and more traditional, yet better ways of eating. I incorporate certain food restrictions and I have found it easy to do so. </span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Here I used a homemade vegetable broth, added carrots, onions, garlic and baby bok choy, herbs and spices.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The baby bok choy was neither steamed nor cooked. I let it sit for a few minutes before serving in the hot broth and it was light, tasty and crunchy to eat. The result was a nourishing and delicious soup, eaten up in no time. Instead of a slice of traditional bread we eat a slice of toasted spelt bread or (sprouted) manna bread.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I have forever avoided eating beans, they never seemed to agree with my tummy, I always felt bloated and flatulent and therefore these foods never saw the tabletop in our house.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I cautiously followed Fallon's recipe, with a few of my own tweaks, and low and behold I have had little to no discomfort. The secret to an easy digestible bean dish lies in the rule of soaking the raw beans for a long time (most beans need 12 -24 hours), then rinsing and slow cooking. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I created a vegetarian baked bean dish in my slow cooker and the time it took from planing to eating was worth the while.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">It was eaten so quickly, that I forgot to make time to take a picture, but the one provided will serve as a substitute, it looks very much like this below. As soon as I'll cook another batch, I will show you. It has become a huge hit in my family and requests have been made to repeat it!</span><br />

<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Here is the recipe:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">2-3 cups of small white beans, soaked for 24 hours in warm water. Discard any broken or strange looking beans. They will extend to 4-5 cups of beans. Take a larger bowl to soak. You can start with warm water and leave it on the counter. Cover with at least three times the water then beans.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">When done, rinse the beans and put in boiling water, skim the foam. This will take a few minutes. Pour beans into a colander and discard the water.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Then peel 2 medium onions and saute with a little butter or ghee (clarified butter) to a golden brown. Do not burn!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I add at this point a small tablespoon of caraway seeds and let them sit with the sauteed onions. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Transfer the onions and caraway seeds into the slow cooker.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Add the beans.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">In a separate small (2cup) measuring cup slowly whisk together:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1/4 cup molasses</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1/4 cup maple syrup</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">3 tablespoons vinegar (I use Bragg's Apple cider vinegar)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">3 tablespoons naturally fermented soy sauce</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1 small organic can tomato paste (the tiny ones)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">3 cloves of garlic, peeled and crushed</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1 tablespoon (Sea) salt</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1 pinch of red chili flakes (optional)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">1/2 teaspoon sweet or smoked paprika powder</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Pour mixture over beans and onions in your slow cooker and add 2 &1/2 cups of vegetable broth (I use Better Then Bouillon Vegetable Base)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Sometimes I add 1/2 cup of carrots, cut in bit size pieces.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmoaFopOws1xyJxXi8Imwhmt2FbYA13ElTIHejl8PqQZsBdu1v1sdlWS0CuQP6xaoCu9_dHtVxeH5Jhkt0SRzcHxosjtOtK_Z9XpqT19b5GPXsBZPckDrH-burGXjtTYj-PJVBhhILWxiE/s1600/Screen+shot+2012-10-10+at+1.11.12+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmoaFopOws1xyJxXi8Imwhmt2FbYA13ElTIHejl8PqQZsBdu1v1sdlWS0CuQP6xaoCu9_dHtVxeH5Jhkt0SRzcHxosjtOtK_Z9XpqT19b5GPXsBZPckDrH-burGXjtTYj-PJVBhhILWxiE/s320/Screen+shot+2012-10-10+at+1.11.12+AM.png" width="290" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Set the slow cooker on high for 7 hours.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Occasionally check and stir the mix and add extra broth if necessary to prevent burning.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I try to time my soaking in such a way that it will be done in the late morning, then I have enough time for the slow cooker to be done way before dinner time. I usually take it out, and put it in covered containers to go into the fridge. This will yield at least 8 portions.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Serve with anything you like to accompany your beans. It is also delicious by itself.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Bon Appetite!</span><br />

<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The day the latest book by J.K.Rowling, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Casual-Vacancy-J-K-Rowling/dp/0316228532/ref=zg_bsnr_books_3"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;"> The Casual Vacancy</span></a>, came out I begun reading it. It had gotten critical reviews, but this did not stop me in the least from being more then curious. It always encourages me....</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I was pulled in from the first pages, with a strange power, which had nothing to do with the framework of the story but with the language at first. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The setting is a small English town, picturesque at the first glimpse. The death of a citizen and councilman evokes the feverish actions to secure the vacant seat in a power struggle, which leaves many townspeople in its wake. There is a war raging, not only around the council vacancy, but also between families, between teenagers without much outlook and across the society at large. We look into a mirror and the reflected image is powerful if not downright ugly.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">With the clinical precision of a successful surgeon, Rowling dissects, she cuts open festering wounds, drains the pus, to make a healing process possible. These are wounds many would rather leave alone. I applaud her for this and admire her form.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Her language is harsh, bordering on the vulgar, but that only adds in my opinion to the truthfulness of the novel. This is not the J.K.Rowling world of Harry Potter. It seems to be the opposite end of her story world spectrum. Where the Potter series shows us a magical world, a world where young people, filled with powers and determination reach their worthy goals, here we find a realistically drawn, egotistical society, adults with faults and ugliness to reach their questionable destinations and teenagers lost, without much hope of a future worth living for. There is bullying, there is calculated 'love' and abuse of power. There is violence and many lies. Only in the end she brings, although not a happy ending, a possible way out. A redemption. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Until the end I was not really interested in the squabbles of the townspeople, but in Rowling's masterful art of writing. The story get stronger and more interesting towards the middle and end, but her way with words kept me going from the start. I did not regret the time.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I was moved in the end and the book and it's message has not let me out of it's grip since I finished the last pages. I keep thinking about it.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">True, the book is filled with strong language, but nevertheless a rich one and I could sometimes see the old, familiar Rowling spinning her tale and there were moments, when I instantaneously made a Potter parody out of some lines. There is her dark humor, Rowling writes with kindness about her fellow citizens. The book struck me with it's honesty, a clear vision of the state of our society and the setting, which, of course, can be anywhere, my own small American town included. It fits in, right here, right now, and if some descriptions seem overdrawn it's for the better.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I would strongly recommend this book, also for teens. It would be appropriate school reading from 10th grade on. It should encourage many discussions and food for thought. Perhaps more then this. A change.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Go, read it!</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">To find my way back into my grove I tend to look for books which give me deep comfort and satisfaction, immersing myself in a different world, yet somehow familiar and challenging at the same time. I found such book in Juliet Barker's biography of the </span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">This morning rose not too hot, just right, to enjoy breakfast on our deck. The WSJ and the New York Times enhanced our breakfast at the table. We freshly squeezed oranges, papaya and frozen bananas for a refreshing fruit drink, had a delicious raw cereal with hemp, flax, chia seeds, some goji berries, walnuts and pecans and cacao mixed with cold almond milk.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">A few fresh dates rounded up a healthy start of the day.</span><br />
